How to use the mud fever care ointment
Wash and dry the skin thoroughly, especially where mud fever is present. Apply a generous layer of the ointment to the affected skin. Do not rub it in. Let the ointment absorb, then leave it to dry. Do not scrape it off. Protective gloves are recommended. Carry out a patch test before first use.
Intensive use: daily for 7 to 10 days, then preventively once or twice a week. Preventive use: once or twice a week, particularly after contact with wet ground. Where there is a large amount of scabbing, call the vet.
Ingredients and how they work
Urea moisturises the skin intensively and softens it, preventing it from cracking. It makes it easier for dead skin to flake away, which supports the regeneration of skin affected by mud fever.
D-panthenol (provitamin B5) soothes irritation and inflammation and speeds up wound healing.
Oregano oil has strong antibacterial and antifungal properties and fights the microorganisms responsible for mud fever. Basil oil has an antiseptic action and soothes redness. Sage oil inhibits the growth of bacteria and fungi and helps regulate sebum production. Tea tree oil cleanses and speeds up the regeneration of the skin.
Zinc oxide and zinc sulphate support healing, have an anti-inflammatory action and help keep the skin dry where it is affected by infection. Pharmaceutical silicone forms a protective layer against moisture.
Which horses it is for and when to use it
The ointment is intended for horses with signs of mud fever, that is red, flaking skin around the pasterns. It is also suitable for preventive use in horses exposed to wet ground, particularly in autumn and winter. It contains no doping substances.

Frequently asked questions
How long should the mud fever ointment be used?
Intensively: daily for 7 to 10 days. After that, move to preventive use once or twice a week to stop it coming back.
Can GrudBye be used on horses that compete?
Yes. The product contains no doping substances.
How does the ointment differ from the GrudBye spray?
The ointment has a thicker consistency and forms a more lasting protective layer, which makes it the better choice for advanced lesions. It also contains zinc oxide. The GrudBye spray is more convenient to apply and is good for prevention and for milder cases.
