Thrush

( number of products: 7 )

Thrush in horses gives itself away through an unpleasant smell, soft, deteriorating tissue around the frog and a dark discharge. It is usually encouraged by a damp environment, dirty bedding and insufficient hoof hygiene, as well as by dips in immunity. The Blue Hooves line consists of care products for thrush, while Strong Hooves with Herbs oil is for everyday hoof care.

Thrush spray or ointment

Both Blue Hooves products contain three sulphates (aluminium, copper and zinc), salicylic acid and oregano and tea tree essential oils. Aluminium sulphate has a drying effect, and zinc sulphate strengthens the structure of the hoof horn. The spray and the ointment are vegan and contain no doping substances.

Blue Hooves thrush spray is suitable for regular use. Application takes a few seconds and does not involve touching the frog, which matters with horses that are sensitive to touch in that area.

Blue Hooves thrush ointment has a thick base formulated with pharmaceutical silicone. On a cleaned frog it forms a lasting layer that protects it from moisture, bedding and dirt from the paddock. That makes it a good choice for horses kept in a damp environment. The two products can also be combined, with the spray for everyday use and the ointment overnight or on particularly wet days. Together with Strong Hooves oil they make up the thrush kit, which is also available in a smaller version.

How to use thrush products

Before the product goes on, the hoof needs to be cleaned thoroughly of mud, stones and leftover bedding, and the frog dried. The spray is applied to the frog and the area around it from a few centimetres away and then left to dry. The ointment is applied with a spatula or with gloves on, over the whole surface of the frog. With the spray, remember to wear protective gloves, do not breathe in the mist from the atomiser and do not let the product come into contact with your skin.

For the first 7 to 10 days the products are applied daily, then once or twice a week and after every farrier visit. They do not replace stable hygiene, meaning dry bedding and picking out the hooves every day, but complement it.

Everyday hoof oil: Strong Hooves with Herbs

Strong Hooves with Herbs is a vegan hoof oil based on four plant oils with vitamin E and tea tree and oregano essential oils. It is used every day when the hooves are exposed to moisture, whereas Blue Hooves are for the care of the frog. The two products therefore complement each other. You can choose between a tin with a brush and a spray that does not spill.
