How to plait with silicone bands
Divide the mane into even sections and plait each one, then roll the plait into a button plait. Secure it by wrapping the band two or three times around the base. Silicone grips the hair well and does not slip, yet it does not cut into the strands.
To take them out, simply slide the band off the end of the plait. If a band is still springy after unplaiting, you can use it again; replace stretched or split ones with new bands.
Plaiting bands: why silicone
Silicone bands have an advantage over ordinary rubber bands: they do not catch in the hair and pull strands out far less often. That matters especially with horses that have a fine or delicate mane, where every tug can damage the hair. Silicone is elastic enough to hold the plait securely and at the same time gentle on the hair.
White: which horses it suits
White bands work best with the light manes of grey, Isabella, palomino, cremello and perlino horses, and with any other horse that has white hair. On light hair they are practically invisible, which gives a clean, elegant plaited finish with no visible fastenings on show. At a competition that is the sort of detail that makes a difference.
If your horse has a dark mane, take a look at the black or brown version, which will blend into the hair better.
How many bands you need for one plaiting session
A standard mane plaited into button plaits takes between 15 and 40 bands, depending on the length and thickness of the hair. A pack of 500 covers many plaiting sessions, so it will comfortably last a whole competition season.
