How to make button plaits with silicone bands
Divide the mane into even sections and plait each one, then roll the plait into a button. Wrap the band two or three times around the base of the plait. The silicone band holds securely, but it does not cut into the hair or cause breakage.
To take them out, gently slide the band off the end of the plait. A band that is still in good condition after unplaiting can be used again. Replace stretched or damaged ones with new bands. Do not cut them with scissors, because silicone bands are reusable.
Black bands for a dark mane
The black colour of the bands blends into dark hair and becomes practically invisible. That matters for a tidy turnout at competitions and shows. On the mane of a black or bay horse, black bands make the button plaits look as though they are holding themselves in place.
If your horse has a light mane, white or transparent bands are the better choice.
Professional plaiting for competitions and training
In training, black bands work just as well as at competitions. They go on quickly, hold the plait securely through a full day's work with the horse and come off easily without tugging at the mane. They are a basic piece of kit for every rider who plaits regularly.
How many bands you need

Do black bands stain the mane?
No. Silicone bands contain no dyes that could transfer to the hair. The colour is permanently bound into the material and does not stain the mane.
Can I use black bands on a light mane?
Technically yes, but they will show. On light manes, white or transparent bands work better.
What is the best way to take the bands out after a competition?
The quickest and safest way is to slide the band off the end of the plait. If the band is still springy after use, it can be used again. Avoid pulling them out, because even silicone bands can tug at strands of hair if they are removed sharply.
